iciHaiti – Environment : «Warning sign of the disappearance of the Haitian people»
As part of the International Day of Forests (March 21), the Haitian Fund for Biodiversity (FHB,) recalls that “forest ecosystems provide us with water, food, natural medicines, oxygen and protect us against the harmful effects of climate change which threaten in particular the Haitian peasant economy and investments in development infrastructure.
These ecosystems are threatened with disappearing from Haitian territory because of extreme poverty exacerbated by poor systemic governance. The degradation of our forests is a harbinger of the disappearance of the Haitian people because the cultural peculiarities of a people are intimately linked to their environment.
The FHB invites Haitian citizens and actors to take another look at the forestry problem in Haiti, to redouble healthy efforts and show good political will in order to assume their responsibility to save this natural heritage on which life in the territory depends. “
