iciHaiti – DR : Contraband and more than 900 illegal Haitians intercepted at the border
The Specialized Land Border Security Corps (CESFRONT) reported in its monthly report that in May 2021, during operations carried out by the Dominican military, in the provinces of Dajabón, Puerto Plata, Elías Piña, Independencia and Pedernales, were seized various contraband goods from Haiti including approximately 33 kg of marijuana, 430 kg of garlic contained in 44 bags and 2.2 million cigarettes. 32 motorcycles, a truck, three 4×4 vehicles, two buses, three cars and a minibus were also seized.
Brigadier General José Manuel Durán Infante Director of CESFRONT, that migratory operations were carried out simultaneously in the border area which made it possible to intercept and arrest 949 illegal undocumented Haitians while they tried to enter illegally on the Dominican territory.
The Haitians were handed over to immigration authorities, to proceed with their registration and verify that they had no outstanding issues with the justice system before being returned to their country.
