Haiti – Turks and Caicos : 23 Haitian boat people intercepted south of Bird Rock
Two days after the rescue of 159 Haitians aboard an overloaded boat stranded on the reefs 18 km south of Providenciales https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-32800-icihaiti-shipwreck-159-haitians-rescued-east-of-the-turks-and-caicos-islands.html the Coast Guard of the Turks and Caicos islands, alerted by the coastal radar station of the presence of a suspicious boat in territorial waters, went there and intercepted a 27-foot boat, 9 km south of Bird Rock.
23 undocumented illegal Haitian migrants were on board, 15 men and 8 women, who were transported aboard the Coast Guard boat. The operation proceeded without incident according to the police authorities. The Haitians were handed over to the execution unit of the Department of Immigration and the health official for immediate assessment, treatment and repatriation to Haiti.
Vaden Delroy Williams the Minister of Immigration declared “This is the second interception in three days, which is very alarming” Recall that for less than a month, 319 illegal Haitians have been intercepted at sea during 4 separate operations, the second largest interception of which was on December 18, or the US Coast Guard intercepted another ship containing 111 Haitians https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-25567-icihaiti-security-arrest-of-111-haitians-at-sea.html
Vaden Delroy Williams addressing those who would be tempted to follow the example said “[…] traveling here illegally is wasted time as our border protection team is very efficient and you will be caught and sent back to your country of origin […]” adding “[..] Do not risk everything you have in these dangerous journeys […]”
